Sometimes, even long after moving in somewhere new, it can still feel like the place you’ve chosen to call home isn’t yours. You might feel as if you’re an intruder haunting another person’s halls, or perhaps you’ve recently noticed something that was conveniently neglected to be mentioned before you moved in.
So what can you do to make your house feel like it’s a home? There are a lot of ways to feel more at home at, well, home, here are some tips on feeling more like you belong inside your four walls.
Redecorate
A lot of the time you walk into a new abode and find crumbling wallpaper, stained floors and rusty sinks. On first glance, this can seem like an overwhelming job to fix, and that can quickly put a lot of people off even trying to change anything.
Before you do anything, though, you need to get rid of everything you do not need. From there, you’re free to tear up carpets, rip off wallpaper and start from scratch. Sure, the house might look a bit of a mess in the interim, but once it’s all done, you’ll be so relieved. For extra satisfaction, take a couple before and after pictures to get a good idea of the new improvement.
Make It Cosy
You’re never going to be comfortable in your home if it doesn’t have an ambience of cosiness. This is especially true during the winter, where you want to insulate as much heat as possible. Have a look around the house, does it have uPVC windows? Is the boiler up to scratch? Are the radiators in a suitable location?
If the answers to any of these questions are no, then it’s a good idea to think about how to start improving your home for your benefit. Adding upgrades to your home will also bring more of a sense of ownership, as you get to watch each room become more and more like you always envisioned.
Show Yourself Off
The best way to make a house feel like a home is to add a touch of your personality throughout. It doesn’t have to be over-the-top self-portraits covering every wall (unless that’s what you want), but identifying the things that you love and showing them off throughout the house is a perfect way of making the whole place feel a lot more like it’s yours.
If you’re a big reader, find a beautiful bookcase to show off your favourite stories, if you love to travel, consider displaying all your souvenirs from distant lands. These are just a few ideas, but it’s really up to you, the place is yours, after all.
Making your mark on your house is essential so that you feel like it is yours. It’s not an easy task, if it were everyone would do it. But you want to look forward to coming home after a long day at work, knowing that you have a safe space to relax and enjoy the evening all to yourself is vital to being happier and making the most out of your time there, as well.
