Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer Review

Insect Bite Healer

Haven’t we been having some glorious weather over the past few weeks but what do you hate most about the British summer? The muggy heat? Thunderstorms and heavy rain showers? Excessive sweating? Or is it those pesky bug bites and stings from a plethora of bugs and insects? Bugs and insects just love the British summer, without complaint, all that nice, uncovered skin for them to bite, sting and feast on. With the hot muggy weather come the mosquitoes, midges, gnats, horseflies, bees and other small insects and they can be annoying, irritating and sometimes even painful when they bite or sting. You can use pills and creams to alleviate the pain, swelling and itchiness but not everyone wants to use chemicals in or on their body. There are chemical/drug free remedies to help with bites and stings and I have been trying out the Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer.

The Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is a chemical-free / drug-free electronic insect pen that is suitable for treating and helping to heal insect bites and stings. With no pills or creams, it achieves this using heat and helps relieve any pain, discomfort or itchiness whilst helping to speed up the healing process.

The BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is a small handheld device, a bit larger than a USB flash drive, measuring approx. 10.1 x 3.6 x 2.0cm. It weighs around 47g (including the batteries). It is a sleek, modern and uncomplicated looking device and is extremely easy to use which is perfect for keeping it your bag.

I attended the school sports day recently and after spending a couple of hours standing out in the sun (and getting a red sunburnt face as I stupidly forgot to apply suncream or wear a hat) I also had a bug or insect decide that I looked tasty and bite me. This resulted in a small, raised lump on my arm, a small swelling that looked red, angry and was very itchy.

When I got home I couldn’t wait to switch on the bite healer to see how it worked and if it would actually make any difference or if it was just another gadget to throw it the drawer. I installed 2x AAA batteries (which are supplied with the device) and switched it on. Immediately a small blue LED light lit up on the front of the device, indicating that it was ready to use.

On the base of the device is a small white ceramic disc (the heating plate) which I pressed against my newly acquired bite (after checking that there was no stinger and that it was indeed a bite – if you do have a sting the stinger needs to be removed before using the device). There is a button on the front of the device that has two operations; press it once and you receive a 3 second burst of heat to the bite, press it twice in very quick succession for a 6 second application. Not knowing what to expect I tried it with the 3 second application so pressed the quite large button once. This resulted in two different things; the ring around the button was half illuminated and then an intense heat was applied to the bite wound. After the 3 seconds were up an audible beep sounded to indicate the three seconds were up.

The heat from the device is very intense, it felt like I was burning my skin (although after checking, I wasn’t burnt and had no visible mark apart from the bite wound). But did these few seconds of heat make any difference? Yes, it did! The heat application immediately soothed the itching and discomfort. It achieved instant temporary relief from the itchiness. It isn’t a one fix treatment, you might need to use it a few times throughout the day, but after a couple of applications you forget that you have been bitten!

Whilst the intense heat from this small pen device does an excellent job of temporarily helping to relieve the itchiness and the constant need to scratch that itch, it also helps to accelerate healing and reduce any swelling.

Overall, this is a MUST HAVE device for anybody that is a summer feast for tiny insects and bugs. Whilst it is no fun being bitten or stung, this little device helps you to enjoy the outdoors this summer in the event that you do become a meal for any flying/crawling pests.

The Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is a simple to use as long as you can stand the heat. Although the heat is very intense and 3 seconds feels a very long time when using this device, for best results you do need to use for the full 3 or 6 seconds. When using it, you will want to remove the device before the treatment is finished as it can feel slightly painful – especially with the 6 second application, but the results are worth it.

When you press the button to activate the device and apply the heat, there is a blue LED ring that will illuminate halfway to indicate the 3 second application and fully illuminate when using the 6 second application. After use, the ceramic heating plate cools down in seconds so that you can safely put it back in your bag, pocket or medicine cabinet.

This small bite healer also features a light so that it can used just as well at night as it is during the day. The light can be switched on/off as required and means you can treat a bite during the night without having to wake anybody else by turning on room lights. The light also makes it perfect to locate and treat bites at night whilst camping etc.

The Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer can be used for up to 300 applications.

I think that this is an excellent little device, but it does come with warnings and is not for use by everybody. It shouldn’t be used by diabetics as in some circumstances pain sensitivity could be reduced resulting in possible burning. There are also warnings not to use on scar tissue or skin sensitivity issues, after taking pain medication drinking alcohol or taking drugs. The manual that is supplied with it (in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Turkish and Russian) covers when and who it can’t be used by – this can be downloaded from the Beurer website if you want to check before buying.

Whilst some people are excluded from using this chemical-free device, it can be used by children over 3 years old (under adult supervision) and for self-treatment by anyone suitable over 12 years old. It can also be used during pregnancy.

As much as we love to complain about the weather, hopefully we will have a long summer will long bright days and some nice heat so that we can all enjoy relaxing outside with a good book, playing in the garden and parks or even having a picnic, going to the beach for the day, going abroad for a holiday, having a barbeque at home with friends or attending the plethora of festivals over the summer without the discomfort of bites and stings.

And if we are unlucky enough to become a bug/insect snack, then the Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is an excellent chemical free device that works well to relieve after bite pain and itchiness whilst at the same time helping to accelerate the healing process. For a few seconds of discomfort/pain whilst using it, the results are worth it.

I think this is an excellent little device to help treat bites and stings without having to apply any creams or take any antihistamines. It is the perfect size to keep in your bag or have in the medicine cabinet. As it offers instant relief from insect bites and stings it is a MUST HAVE device to help you enjoy the outdoors.
