Woodland Hedgehugs Activity Book Review

Hedgehugs

Explore the woodland with the Hedgehugs!

I love Maverick’s range of children’s books as they are also bright, colourful and entertaining so was delighted to receive the new Woodland Hedgehugs Activity Book (published January 2017) for review. Written by Steve Wilson and illustrated by Lucy Tapper, it features the bestselling Hedgehugs characters and is the first in a series of four sensory activity books. The book is aimed at children aged between 3 to 9 years old and is designed for them to explore the outside world and magic of woodlands.

This 32 page activity book sees children join 2 loveable hedgehogs, Horace and Hettie, who are the best of friends, exploring their woodland home. It provides lots of fun facts about the woodland environment and the animals that live there, features games, activities, craft ideas and sensory play ideas.

Now as we don’t live near easily accessible woodlands, we tried (4 year old twin boys) some of the activities that you can do at home like making your own woodland with toilet roll tubes and cardboard. But to make full use of the book we gave it to a friend to try with her children as they live near the woods and could take full advantage of the activities. This is what they thought of it:

The book is really nicely illustrated and contains lots of activities for young children. The illustrations and activities are all based around two hedgehogs, Horace and Hattie. My girls found the pages and activities to be really engaging, and they loved searching out different leaves, colours and sounds. – Louise Totton

Overall this is a fun-packed activity book that helps children get outdoors to explore their environment, while at the same time getting fresh air and exercise. And for when at home features plenty of messy play to continue the woodland theme. This is a great book for development of observational skills, learning about the environment, messy sensory play and lots of fun activities. If you live near, or visit, woodlands then this is an excellent companion book for children to make full use of their environment and a great way to spend quality time with the kids.

The book is very well laid out, easy to follow and beautifully illustrated. While only 32 pages long it is packed with plenty of fun things to do from bug hunts to flower spotting, colouring and drawing, making your own woodlands and woodland map and lots more besides. Hours of fun and entertainment.
