Ramu Gupta (Jimi Mistry) is a dance teacher in Delhi, India and has been obsessed with dancing and acting ever since seeing the musical Grease as a child in the cinema. When his friend that moved to New York brags of how he has made it with his red Mercedes and penthouse apartment he decides to leave India and heads to New York to become a movie star. On arrival he finds his friend drives a cab and the penthouse is not exactly what was promised and is shared with an illegal immigrant. After failing as a waiter in an Indian restaurant the innocent and naïve Ramu accidently lands a job in a porn film but that doesn’t go as planned.

At a party for a rich girl, Lexi (Marisa Tomei), who has no direction in her life he has to play the part of a Guru and realises that he could make a living as a Guru. He then befriends his porn co-star Sharonna (Heather Graham) to teach him about sex and the philosophy behind it. Sharonna is also living a double life as her fiancé thinks she is a sweet and innocent virgin school teacher. With Sharonna’s help and words of wisdom Ramu becomes New York’s Guru of Sex helping the socialites of New York improve their relationships and helping Lexi on her path of discovery. This sets Ramu onto his path of fame and fortune but he soon discovers that is not what he really wants.

Overall, The Guru is a funny and entertaining romantic comedy where East meets West, mixing Bollywood with Hollywood and I thought it worked quite well for the most part. Along with the comedy there are musical numbers such as Grease danced in Bollywood style and dress and I thought these were excellent (although I know nothing of Bollywood).

This is a light-hearted comedy about a man following his dream to become famous but instead finds love and realises it is more important that fame.
