Whether you want some peace and quiet in your home office or you want to keep the traffic noise away from your movie room, soundproofing a room is always going to be a great solution. However, if you do this properly, the costs can end up spiralling out of control. There are a few shortcuts which you can do when you want a calm room but you don’t have an enormous budget to spend. In this blog post, we are going to look in more detail at a few of them.
Install Sound Curtains
Thick sound curtains are designed to be draped over your walls to absorb a lot of the noise that you get coming through them. If you are looking for more DIY solutions, you could always mount some thick curtains to the walls instead. Similarly, it also helps to have some thick carpeting or rugs on the floor – particularly if you live in an apartment block. However, it is worth bearing in mind that if you already have walls which are thick and insulated, this is not going to have an effect which is quite as noticeable.
Create Bookcase Walls
A wall full of books does quite a nice job of absorbing the sound coming through them. Of course, you will need big bookcases that mount from the floor to ceiling in order to have the maximum effect. Not only is this an effective solution, it is also an attractive one as you will end up with a nice library area.
Put in a Door Sweep
A door sweep is a rubber loop which is designed to block off that area of noise which comes underneath the door. If the gap proves to be too large for the sweep, you could nail a strip of lumber down there to start off with. Though this may only seem like a small thing, everything can add up to making your room soundproof.
Cover Up Reflective Surfaces
As much as possible, you should be looking to cover up any surfaces which have been left bare as these are the ones which are going to end up reflecting the most noise. There are all sorts of design options that you could look into depending on your personal preferences.
Soundproof Construction
If you really want to go all-out, you could look into soundproof construction options. Thicker and denser material will serve to absorb more sound, so if you are looking to redesign your room totally, you could always check out the thicker wall options and acoustic panels that are available to you. Obviously, spending a bit more time and money on your soundproofing options is always going to be the way that you end up with a better finished product.
Once you have the quiet that soundproofing provides, you will find a much greater sense of peace and serenity in your home.
