The Most Important Improvements You Can Make To Your Home This Year

Improvements

If you are a bit of a DIY addict then, making improvements to your living space can seem never ending. But not all home improvement projects are created equal. Some are going to make your living environment more pleasant than others. So it best to choose wisely when you feel the urge to DIY coming on. Read on to find out more.

Declutter

The first, and maybe the most important home improvement that you can make this year is to declutter your living space. It doesn’t matter if you live in a million pound mansion, if there is stuff everywhere you look, it isn’t going to be a pleasant environment to spend your time in.

The first thing you need to do is assess how bad the clutter situation has got. Some people that are just clearing out a cupboard or two at a time may be able to fit the rubbish and recycling into their car to take it to be disposed of. For others skip hire is the best solution, as they have such a high volume of stuff it would be impractical to try and shift it by themselves.

If you find decluttering difficult, then it can help to be as objective as possible. You can assign sentimental meaning to anything if you try hard enough, so that is not always a good way of assessing whether to keep or throw items. Instead, limit the amount of time you have to make a decision about what you will be keeping and what you will be throwing out.

For example, you can clear a cupboard in 10 minutes, by making instinctive decisions on what to keep, what to donate and what to throw away. By limiting your time like this you have less of a chance of ruminating over things, and getting swayed to keep stuff that you don’t really need.

Paint

It’s surprising how much of a difference a lick of paint can make when improving your home. A room can seem new with no more effort that getting a fresh coat of paint on the walls.

Even cream or white walls can usually benefit from being refreshed now and again. Pick paint that is washable too so if it gets marked for any reasons it’s easy to just wipe the stain off, rather than repainting the entire room.

Kitchen

People trying to sell their homes know how much of a difference that a kitchen can make. But those that aren’t planning on moving anytime soon often put up with a shabby kitchen. This is a mistake because the kitchen is the place in your home that shows its age more than any other.

If your cupboard doors and worktops look shabby or dated, it can give the whole house a dilapidated feel. So renovating the kitchen, it’s definitely one of the most important improvements you can do to your house.

Add some interest

The next important improvement you can make around the home is to add some interest. Homes are pretty easy to customise inside because what you do with the space is up to you.

That means you can install a bar, hot tub or conservatory if you choose. All of which are perfect for adding a little more character to your living space.
