Needlite Daylight Lamps Review

Needlite
The power of daylight on your desk!

The mornings are darker longer, the evenings are getting darker earlier and the space inbetween isn’t exactly filled with bright sunshine (at least not here in Manchester anyway). So, when I was asked to try out the Needlite desk lamp, I of course said yes, especially as I spend a lot of time at my desk working.

The Needlite is a set of 2 daylight desk lamps and is described as “an innovative desk lamp with daylight which automatically gives you all the benefits of daylight while working”.

I have had the Needlite lamps on my desk, either side of my laptop, for a few weeks now and they do a great job, very bright, adjustable brightness, produce no heat and look very elegant.

I spend a lot of my time working at my desk, from early morning to sometimes late into the night, so good lighting is a must. I don’t like to have the main ceiling lights on at night and prefer a good desk lamp. The Needlite delivers great light but has added benefits over a standard desk lamp. It is a daylight lamp, giving great bright white light that is not harsh but as the we have less natural daylight during the autumn and winter months the Needlite is a great alternative. The manufacturers claim that the Needlite gives; more energy, better performance, better mood and focus, better sleep, a constant boost of daylight while you work and higher productivity. While I can claim to have more energy, a better mood or sleep due to using the lights (although I can’t say they don’t either as it’s not something I am actively monitoring), I can say that as the light is bright and consistent with no flicker it does not hurt my eyes and I can sit and work longer without any eye strain, so does help performance and a higher productivity. You can read about the research of how daylight/lack of daylight can have an effect on our lives on the Needlite website.

The Needlite is a set of two upright LED lamps with energy saving bulbs. It has contemporary aluminium design for the bases and features no buttons, knobs or switches; it is touch controlled, and you can touch anywhere on either base to turn the lights on or off or adjust the brightness. It doesn’t matter what light you touch as both are work simultaneously; for example, press the base once and both lights with turn off together or touch and hold the base for a few seconds and it adjusts the brightness to the same level on both lights. The energy saving LED bulbs emit the same bright, white light as daylight and light up the desk area and laptop perfectly without creating reflections.

Setting up is straightforward and simple; just plug them into the mains. As mentioned previously, you just touch one of the bases to operate them or if you have an iPhone you can use the app to do the same thing (I have an Android phone so couldn’t try this function – my phone and iPad do see the lights but unfortunately can’t control the lights, although this isn’t an issue for me as I sit at the desk where the lights are being used). As the lights themselves are energy saving LED’s they are cool to touch and produce no heat and don’t cost much to run.

Overall, the Needlite is a very powerful desk lamp that creates brilliant white daylight that doesn’t hurt your eyes and is a pleasure to work with. Because the light is perfect it makes working in darkened rooms much easier and not so tiring. As the light isn’t tiring, work output is much better and they are great for typing, reading and photo editing. As they are producing a daylight glow they would also be beneficial for people suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

The only small negative I found with the Needlite is not to have any trailing cables on the desk too close to the base of the Needlite as I found that the movement of the cable touching the base turned the lights off – and if that is the only bad thing I can say about them then they can’t be bad.

A great addition to any workspace or desk. Add a pair to your desk today and you too can have the power of daylight right there on your desk.
