If You Were Me and Lived in… The American West Review

American West

If You Were Me and Lived in… The American West is a fun and educational look at The Wagon Trail and the trek from East to West in search of a better life!

We are back for another adventure back in time and this time award-winning author Carole P. Roman takes us back to the American West, complete with cowboys and Indians! It has been beautifully illustrated by Paula Tabor.

If You Were Me and Lived in… The American West is a book written for children to introduce them to a different time period, in this case 1843 and told through the eyes of a child. The book is written as if a 12 year old child from 1843 was telling children what it was like growing up then. It gives a unique basic history lesson in a fun way.

As I have already mentioned, this book takes us back to 1843 and onto the “Wagon Trail” which saw people migrating West, after flooding on the East Coast, looking for a better life.

The book covers basics such as; children’s names of the time, what kind of clothing they would wear, what food they ate, travelling through some harsh weather conditions, meeting native Indians, their schooling and work life and customs. When they reached their destinations it tells the story of how land was built on and farmed and how this in turn created small towns.

There are also 2 pages at the back of the book featuring names and information about famous people that helped to shape “The American West”; such as the sharpshooter Annie Oakley, the explorer and pioneer Daniel Boon, Geronimo the leader of the Apache Indian tribe as well as lawmen Wild Bill Hickok and Wyatt Earp.

The book is also completed with a glossary telling the meaning of some words children would be unfamiliar with and pronunciations.

Overall, If You Were Me and Lived in… The American West is a fun and educational book and a great starting point for children to learn about the history of the American West.

I would highly recommend this and the rest of the If You Were Me and Lived in… series.
