Moving, Minus The Hassle

Moving

If you’ve ever had to organise a home move before, then you’ll know how stressful and hectic the whole process can be. If you’ve never done it before, then you’re in for quite the ride! Whatever your level of experience, moving to a new home is never as simple as we’d like it to be with all the different things that could potentially go wrong. Still, I thought I’d share some tips for making yours as quick and easy as possible.

Shed as Much as Possible

When people first move into university halls, moving is a walk in the park. The main reason behind this is that students don’t have that much stuff! However, once we grow up and move into our own homes or flats, most of us quickly pile up all kinds of stuff we don’t really need. If this sounds all too familiar, then having a big declutter before your move is highly recommended. Go from room to room, gathering stuff no one wants or needs anymore. Then, sell it on sites like Gumtree, at car boots, donate them to charity shops or throw them out. By lightening your load as much as possible, you’ll make the moving process a lot faster and easier.

Pack Room by Room

The actual move from one location to the next is stressful enough. After that, you’ve got to deal with the added headache of unpacking everything and getting it to the right place. By packing room by room, and keeping all your boxes organised accordingly, you can make this part of the process so much easier. Start off by picturing the home you’re moving into, and deciding where you want everything to live once you’re settled in. Then, when you start packing, make sure you keep separate boxes for separate rooms. Load everything you want from the kitchen into one box, tape it up and write “kitchen” on the top, for example. Obviously, you’ll want to get it all out of the way as quickly as possible, so it may be tempting rush around the home getting everything into random boxes, and worrying about unpacking later. However, if you put in a little more work now, getting settled in at your new place will be so much easier.

Think About Storage

Okay, if you had a go at my first tip, but found that there really wasn’t much that you could comfortably throw away, then you may still have a pretty big task ahead of you. A lot of people, when they’ve got an especially large amount of stuff to take from A to B, assume that they’ve got to move it all in one go. Don’t make things so hard for yourself! If you know moving everything in one sitting will be too much hassle, look into services like Squab storage. Companies like this will keep your things secure while you get settled in, and allow you to move your stuff into your new home when it’s convenient for you. If you can’t shed your stuff, don’t let it weigh you down!
