I am a big fan of Edifier speakers and have used various different ones over the years. They always have excellent sound, are built well and always look very stylish.
For my latest offering I was sent the S880DB active bookshelf speakers which again are built to the same high standards and look superb.
The S880DB are the first Hi-Res Audio Certified speakers from Edifier and also feature Four EQ Modes with a Titanium-laminate dome treble driver.
With their white body and light wooden sides they sleek and stylish. They measure approx. 24cm high, approx. 12cm wide and 18cm deep so don’t take up an enormous amount of space on the shelf or desk.
Connectivity options are plenty; RCA, AUX, USB, optical, coaxial, and Bluetooth 4.1. This gives the opportunity to connect to a whole host of different equipment such as laptops/desktop computers, phones, tablets or even gaming consoles.
Once connected, they produce a rich, well-balanced sound with no distortion (even at the highest levels). They are active speakers (they have a built-in amp) and have a power output of R/L (treble): 12W+12W, R/L (deep bass): 32W+32W, giving a total output of 88w. They also feature XMOS Digital Audio Processor if you use USB as a connection for your laptop etc.
The controls for the volume, treble and bass are on the rear on one speaker, but they can also be used with the supplied remote control. The remote control is quite funky with its round design. It sits quite nicely on the desk and is quite weighty despite its size. It features the standard on/off, source selection, play/pause, volume and forward/backward buttons along with buttons for dynamic, monitor, classic and vocal preset EQ settings so you can easily change depending on what type of audio you want to listen to.
Overall, the Edifier S8880DB active bookshelf speakers are premium speakers, they look it and sound it! I think, although priced at around £260, are a worthy investment if you like quality sound and build. Very impressive and a great addition to any system. The Bluetooth connectivity is great, works well with no interruption and saves having cables everywhere (plus means I can connect different devices without having to move cables).
