Readers of my blog might have noticed that over the years I have tried, tested and reviewed a number of Edifier speakers over the years (portable, bookshelf and soundbar) and I have always been impressed by their quality and sound.
For review this time, I was sent the new Edifier R1280DB Multimedia Speakers; 2.0 amplified bookshelf speakers with a total of 42w of power (each speaker producing 21w).
I received the speakers in black, also available in brown. They look very sleek. The Edifier R1280DB speakers have various options to connect to pc’s, laptops, tablets and phones as they feature 3.5mm to RCA, 3.5mm AUX, Optical/Coaxial for wired connections and wireless Bluetooth connection. The controls are on the side of the active/powered speaker but they also come with a small wireless remote control.
Setting up the speakers was very easy and took a matter of minutes. The speakers are supplied with a 2.5m speaker wire that connects each speaker (as it is standard speaker cable you can add your own if you needed a longer length). Then you decide how to connect to your chosen device – 3.5mm to RCA, 3.5mm AUX, Optical/Coaxial or Bluetooth (speakers are supplied with 3.5mm to RCA, 3.5mm AUX and Optical cables). As I don’t like a lot of cables trailing everywhere, I chose the Bluetooth option to connect to my tablet.
Pairing the speakers with my tablet was simple, straightforward, painless and connected first time, no problems. I watched a full-length film and during that time the sound was consistent (no dropping sound or disconnecting). The sound was high-quality and very clear, it filled the room and there was no distortion, even when turning up to full volume. With 42w power output the speakers are more than loud enough for home/small office use.
The active speaker (powered one) has the controls on the side for power on/off, volume, treble and bass but it is much easier to use the remote that is supplied. The remote is small and slim and fits neatly into the palm of your hand. With controls for power, volume, play, pause, forward, rewind and input selection (you can change input source at the touch of a button, so can switch between Bluetooth or wired connection easily) it has everything you need. The remote is very lightweight and comfortable to hold.
Overall, I am very impressed with the Edifier R1280DB speakers. They look great in black and you can remove the front grill if you prefer them that way. They are very easy to set up and control and with a variety of connection options so you can connect easily to an array of devices (phone, laptop, tablet etc.).
For me, the Edifier R1280DB are a great looking and excellent sounding pair of speakers that will look great with any set up.
