Deadly Deceit by Jean Harrod Review

Deadly Deceit

Deadly Deceit is a fast-paced, exciting and thrilling novel filled with secrets and murder!

Deadly Deceit is the second book in the Diplomatic Crime Series written by former British diplomat Jean Harrod.

Deadly Deceit sees British diplomat Jess Turner on a new assignment, this time to the Governor’s Office on the tiny Turks and Caicos Islands in the tropical Caribbean. She is there to cover for a colleague who has to fly to back to the UK as his mother is ill. The idyllic setting in the picture postcard setting sounds like heaven but when the governor is critically injured in a car crash and a gruesome murder occurs Jess has stumbled on to an island filled with secrets, lies, distrust, illegal immigration, voodoo, suicide, murder and cover ups that will not only have consequences for the islands but for the powers that be back in London.

Jess’s friend and Australian detective DI Tom Sangster is in Miami on a fact-finding mission to see how other governments deal with the worldwide problem of illegal immigration and people smuggling. He sees Jess walking through Miami airport on her way to the Turks and Caicos Islands and sends her an email requesting to visit. No sooner as he arrives he is soon involved in Jess’s case investigating the murder and although he has no authority on the islands soon discovers disturbing information about what is occurring on the British Oversees Territory.

If murder and suicide weren’t enough, along with everybody hiding secrets a hurricane is on course to hit the islands just adding to the problems and will see them fighting for their lives in more ways than one.

Overall, this book really surprised me. I love thrillers but don’t normally read diplomatic or political ones, but when I read the press release for Deadly Deceit it sounded quite interesting although I must admit that being written by a former diplomat I did expect it to be quite dry. I couldn’t have been more wrong and am glad I was! So while the saying is “never judge a book by its cover”, never judge a book by a preconceived stereotype of the author. Deadly Deceit is extremely well written and is certainly as far removed from dry as you can get. While the author clearly uses her experiences of being a diplomat she has used her experience and knowledge well and has written a fast-paced, thrilling and extremely exciting story and a series that I see being a very big success.

With strange things happening on the islands, islanders terrified but fearful of outsiders, attempted murder, brutal murder and cover ups this book has everything to thrill and keep you intrigued and doesn’t reveal its secrets until the very end.

Although this is the second book in the Diplomatic Crime Series it can be read as a standalone novel without needing to know what happened in the first. I haven’t read the first book but loved this so much I will have to read it.

If you want a decent and exciting thriller then I can highly recommend Deadly Deceit and look forward to reading more in this series.
