Being a Captain is Hard Work Review

Hard Work

A high seas adventure where Captain No Beard soon realises that Being a Captain is Hard Work!

Being a Captain is Hard Work is a Captain No Beard story from the award-winning children’s author Carole P Roman.

Captain No Beard and his crew (Mongo, Hallie, Cayla, Zachary, Polly, Fribbet, Linus and Matie) are back on-board the Flying Dragon for another high seas adventure. Captain No Beard has set his mind on sailing to Dew Rite Volcano and he is determined to do so regardless of the opinions of his crew.

When Captain No Beard is advised by his crew that sailing to Dew Rite Volcano is a bad idea as a storm is approaching and the direction he wants to go in is wrong, he doesn’t take their advice as being a Captain he knows everything! Due to his single-minded stubbornness the crew and the Flying Dragon are soon in jeopardy but will the Captain realise the error of his ways in time?

The Captain No Beard stories are always a great read and I must admit I enjoy reading them as well as the 3 year old twins I read them to. They are always extremely well-written in a way children can understand, always beautifully illustrated and always contain an excellent moral message.

The message to be taken away from this story is that being, stubborn and closed-minded will lead to trouble and that you should always listen to your friends advice and make decisions based on all available information, especially when other people could be affected.

Nobody can know everything, not even a ship’s captain so this story teaches to listen to others and respect their views and ultimately how to admit and learn from your mistakes.

As well as a great story and life lesson the book is also educational in a very subtle way introducing different cloud formations and their names (there is even a glossary of clouds with pronunciations at the back of the book).

Overall, a great educational story that teaches listening skills, respecting others, admitting your mistakes and learning from them and humility.
