Moving to a new house can be a very stressful and costly process. Not only to you have to spend a lot of time packing but you also have to transport it to your new home. I moved to a new house about a year ago and was very glad that I had some help as it’s amazing how much stuff you actually have to what you think you have, years of accumulated stuff that you forget existed. That said, there are some ways your can reduce the stress and make the process go much more smoothly.

Book professional removers

Firstly, to move all your furniture and other items you will need transport. You may be able to use your own car, but for bulky items of furniture they may not fit, and you would be going backwards and forwards all day, very stressful – especially in city traffic! If you don’t have your own van you will need to rent one, hire a removals company (which can be a considerable cost), or better still – hire a man with a van! Not only will you get a van and driver, but someone who can help you load the van professionally (their know how and experience would help pack more into the van) and at a lower rate than a big removals company would charge and they would be responsible for getting all your items safety to your new home.

For example, a man and van that provide same day services in London that offer free quotes and different sized vans charged by the hour (minimum 2 hours) would save lots of time and stress, and you only pay for the time you use; i.e. if you only use them for 2½ hours, you are only charged for 2½ hours and not rounded up to 3 hours . The Man Van website is easy to use and provides plenty of information from free quotes, best packaging and even a moving checklist.

Get good packaging materials

Make sure to get plenty of strong boxes and strong tape. If you want to save a bit of money on boxes, ask your local supermarket or local shop for some. Do not overfill boxes with heavy items (having the bottom of the box fall out with just add to you stress). I would suggest using strong woven tape for heavy items; it is expensive but is much stronger than standard brown packing tape. And make sure that you have plenty of bubble wrap for those precious and breakable items.

Declutter

While you are packing, use the time to declutter so that you are not moving unnecessary items. Throw away anything broken or unusable and sell/give away anything that is good but that you no longer want or have no room for in your new home – there are plenty of options for this from eBay, Freecycle, Gumtree and even Facebook selling pages.

Pack room by room

Make sure you pack one room at a time and label the boxes. This will make it much easier when unloading the van at the other end and putting the right things in the correct rooms, removing stress of being able to find things.

Leave plenty of time for packing

Don’t leave it until moving day to start packing! Once you know you will be moving, start packing all the items that are not necessary such as books and dvds etc. This will not only save time on moving day but will give you more time to pack and do it at a measured pace, reducing any stress.

In conclusion, while moving to a new house is always going to be stressful, proper planning in advance can make it much easier. And it doesn’t need to be as costly as you think!
