Making Your Interior Design Really Shine

Interior Design

Interior design doesn’t have to be something reserved for the professionals. Anyone with a bit of spare time on their hands can redesign their homes to look like the glamorous spectacles you see on renovation-based TV shows or real estate websites. What looks aesthetically-pleasing to the human eye is subjective in some senses but objective in others. For example, clutter never looks good (you’re just being awkward if you say it does). Even if you have no idea where to begin when it comes to redesigning your home’s interior, all it takes is a little research before you’re as knowledgeable as the pros. And this article is a good place to begin, so here are some pieces of advice on making your house’s interior design really shine.

Minimalism

That’s a word everybody throws around these days but there’s a good reason as to why it’s so popular. Minimalism, first of all, is about cutting down on all the excess clutter which not only ruins the aesthetic of your house but which you no longer really need. It’s a practical project and also a visually-pleasing one. You shouldn’t be hoarding belongings that hold no relevance to you or which you never use; it doesn’t make your interior design more “homely”. It makes it less homely if anything. The goal isn’t to get rid of all your possessions but to simply cut down your possessions to the things you actually need or which actually mean something to you.

Another key part of minimalism is neutrality. This is about stripping your home back to basics before you start adding flourishes of design and vivid colours to the place in order to make it shine. Before you get to that point, you need to design your home’s interior with a neutral palette; that way, colours and themes you add in the future won’t clash with the underlying design. To explain, you should paint the walls white; bolder colours can lead to clashing themes and also look a little tacky. White never goes out of fashion. It’s also a great way to naturally reflect sunlight and brighten up your house during the day.

Comfort

Don’t ever neglect the importance of the comfort factor. A pretty aesthetic is important, but the best interior designers know that a real home has to be practical as well as visually-pleasing. Start off with the living room. Leather sofas might look sleek and sophisticated but the question is: are these the most comfortable sofas you could buy? Probably not. You have to find that fine blend between the cosy-but-ugly sofa at your parent’s house and the pretty-but-uncomfortable sofa you saw in a furniture shop.

And when it comes to your bedroom, you definitely shouldn’t compromise on comfort; this should be the one place in the house that feels cosy and inviting. After a long day at work, you want to be able to collapse on your bed without face-planting a squeaky or rock-solid mattress. You should also look at some feather duvets because those are definitely the cherry on top of a comfy bed. The point is that this is the main room in which you shouldn’t compromise on comfort.

Timelessness

You don’t have to spend a fortune on designing your home, and you certainly don’t have to opt for contemporary design all the time. If you go too overboard with bold trends then you might find that your house’s interior design goes out of fashion more quickly and you’ll just have to redesign it again in a few years. That’s why the minimalist look is such a smart idea; it keeps things timeless. Wallpaper becomes faded, old, and ugly over time; colours never go out of fashion, as mentioned before. Don’t be afraid of vintage items or the shabby-chic look; many traditional designs of furnishings and other home items are more likely to stand the test of time.
