Choosing the Right Car for You

Buying a car is a pretty big decision so you want to get it right first time. For many people, choosing to buy the car they learned in is an obvious choice (it’s no wonder driving instructors are often offered better rates!) but sometimes a change is in the wind.

Whether you are all up on the latest motor trade trends or you just want to find “a red one” that goes, you will need to do a bit of work before you swap your credit card for the keys. Here’s what you should do.

Doing the Maths

Buying a car or leasing a car – you will need to do some maths.

Start by looking at how much you are willing to spend on a car using your savings. Do remember that while buying new does have some advantages, you are likely to get a much better deal on a secondhand car that is a year old or more. Cars depreciate almost as soon as you get them home after all!

Next, you should look at your monthly allowance. From this, you will need to be able to afford insurance, road tax, petrol and parking. Some cars are built to minimize fuel consumption but many with larger engines are basically just gas guzzlers! Use the car costs calculator to work out the cost of running your vehicle before you buy as a good deal might not be as good as it looks.

Weighing the Pros and Cons

Each car has some pros and cons which can range from seating position to turning circle. In some circumstances, you might be willing to go for something that isn’t quite as good because the cost is less but in others, you might choose to spend a little more. As long as the car is fully functioning and safe to drive, this is mostly down to personal choice.

Test driving is always the best way to work out whether a car you are unfamiliar with could be right for you and there are a few great tips for getting the most from this session. For example, if you are looking for a family car, the whole family should join you on a test drive to see whether it is easy for everyone to get in and both you and your partner are happy to being the driver’s seat.

The Added Extras

Of course, modern cars come with so many awesome added extras that you would be hard pushed not to consider what sort of sound system you want or whether you should enable GPS. Indeed, some of these extras could even add value to your car when you come to sell it on.

When it comes to a compromise, the added extras are usually the first things to go but do think carefully before you say goodbye. Your experience of driving is really important to get right and you do want to enjoy being in the car. If that little extra is what makes it then splashing out just a little bit is a good idea.
